Surfing isn't perhaps something you'd automatically associate with Jamaica.
But surfing in Jamaica with the local surfers is an unforgettable ocean experience.
Surfing is one of the water sports activities that do not get enough hype because sunbathing and playing at the shallows are activities more talked about.
But why not take it a step further and try this extreme water sport in the majestic waves on Jamaica’s east and south coasts?
Of course, you’ll need to have the proper gear for maximum safety. There are a few surf stores splashed across the island where you can buy wax, fins, deck pads, and surf wear, among other items for your ocean experience.
Surfing hotspots
Boston bay
Just before you enjoy a favorable plate of the best jerk in Jamaica, try soaking up some thrilling waves at Boston Bay.
This location in Portland is a widely-known surfing hotspot because there are a number of beaches along the coast to choose from.
These include the tucked-away Navy Island, Winnifred Beach, Outback, Ranch, and Long Back.
Bull bay
Surfing in Jamaica was popularized at this east coast location. It’s the home of the legendary surf camp hosted by the Wilmot family.
Bull Bay is also the birthplace of Jamaica’s first professional surfer, Elishama Beckford (everyone calls him Shama). Relish in the longest rides on water in Bull Bay during your Jamaican vacation.
Makka
Still, in the parish of St. Thomas, Makka in Yallahs is another hotspot for surfing in Jamaica.
While it is a small beach, it is arguably the local surfing location that offers the most outstanding water tubes.
Also, this is the location where hundreds of surfers from all parts of the Caribbean congregate for the biggest surf competition in the region, Makka Pro.
You can experience long rides on consistent waves at this surfing hotspot.
Pro-surfing tip
Whether you’re new or a pro, we recommend that you try surfing from March to December.
You may discover choppy, unsafe waves during other months of the year.
